UCLA FOOTBALL: Bruins don't find Kraft Hunger Bowl a laughing matter

SAN FRANCISCO - Cue the laugh track, folks.

So many jokes have been told since the announcement of the Kraft Fight Hunger Bowl on Dec. 4 that Henny Youngman would be proud. College football writers became Catskills comedians while using UCLA and Illinois as punch lines.

Here are two teams that back-doored into the postseason, further proof the bowl system is a farce, two teams with interim head coaches who will not be retained, two teams that have elicited more guffaws than a season of "Saturday Night Live."

Just don't tell the players.

"We're both teams who've had up-and-down seasons, both coaches have been fired, we're both in the same spot," UCLA junior quarterback Kevin Prince said. "And in bowl games like this, it's the team who wants to win it the most that does. The team that wants to be here.

"We have to make sure that we're that team."

The teams may find themselves in similar circumstances, but their respective paths varied greatly.

UCLA's season was a rollercoaster, the peaks and valleys of a mountain range, the ride so nauseating fans turned purple in the face. Just when all appeared lost and a 48-12 loss to Arizona in Week 7 indicating a tailspin, the Bruins surprised everyone by winning two in a row over Cal and Arizona State and eventually headed to USC in Week 12 on a 3-1 streak.

What followed was nothing short of a disaster - a 50-0 loss to the Trojans that spelled the beginning of the

end of the Rick Neuheisel era, followed by a 49-31 loss to Oregon in the Pac-12 championship game, after which offensive coordinator Mike Johnson assumed the role of interim head coach.

In the beginning some players were questionable about being at school for another month, but now they are "all in," running back Johnathan Franklin said.

"You look at the last two games we played, 50-0, then losing to Oregon to go to the Rose Bowl, and we definitely need a win. Losing? Being 6-8? No," Franklin said.

Illinois, meanwhile, had one big rise and a similar fall.

The Illini started the season 6-0 behind a relentless defense that ranks seventh out of 120 FBS teams in total defense, fourth in pass defense, ninth in sacks and fifth in tackles for loss. To that point, Illinois' offense had been keeping up its end of the bargain while ranking 33rd nationally.

Then came a six-game slide against a brutal schedule that included losses to Ohio State, Wisconsin, Penn State and Michigan and, ultimately, the termination of Ron Zook a day after Neuheisel's firing and the subsequent promotion of defensive coordinator Vic Koenning as interim head coach.

"We have a clear mind of who we're playing and what we're going up against," UCLA junior cornerback Andrew Abbott said. "We know what their season was like. We respect them, but this game is more about us. It starts at home."

It starts at home and, more specifically, it starts up front.

UCLA (6-7, 4-3) picked a poor time to have its offensive line reeling from injury and suspension as Whitney Mercilus leads a ferocious front four into AT&T Park. UCLA junior offensive tackle Brett Downey, a former walk-on, will make his first start against the Illini defensive end who led the nation in sacks (14<MD+,%30,%55,%70>1/<MD-,%0,%55,%70>2) and forced fumbles (nine).

Downey will get a little help, though.

"It will be a test, and a lot of it will fall on my shoulders," Prince said. "I'll have to make sure we're in the right protection and that guys know where they're going. It's going to be on me that when we are throwing the ball, that I'm getting it out fast and that I know where I'm going with it."

So often this season, that has been Nelson Rosario.

The senior wide receiver perhaps has the most to gain among the Bruins, already over the 1,000-yard mark but with a chance to boost his NFL draft stock with an impressive showing.

And Prince is sure to go to him early and often because that's what you do when everything around you is tumbling down. You stick with what you know and who you know, and hope everyone rises to the occasion.

And you try to make everybody stop laughing.

"It's been weird; any time you have a coach who's fired, it's strange," Prince said. "The way we have practiced has been different. The way we're coached is different. Being able to adjust to that and get our focus on to this game has been tough, but I think we've done it.

"We're here, we're in San Francisco, and we have the feeling that the game is right here for us."

(AP) ? James Rizzi applied his playful, cartoon-like art style to unusual projects worldwide, from Volkswagen Beetles and Japanese train ads to cow sculptures in New York and the front page of a German newspaper.

His creations included images for German postage stamps and a tourist guide to New York published this year. He was the official artist for the 1996 Summer Olympics in Atlanta, the Montreux Jazz Festival in Switzerland and soccer World Cup games in France.

"With his art, what you see is what you get," said Alexander Lieventhal, an executive at Art 28 GmbH & Co. in Stuttgart, Germany, which manages and sells Rizzi's work. "Any child can look at it and understand what he's trying to convey: a celebration of life."

Rizzi, a native of Brooklyn, died Monday at his New York studio at age 61. He had a heart condition, Lieventhal said.

Rizzi studied art at the University of Florida in Gainesville, where his groundbreaking techniques began with three-dimensional constructions that evolved from a youthful failure.

For his classes in painting, printmaking and sculpturing, he had to hand in work for grades in all three subjects. But Rizzi had time to complete only one: a twice-printed etching, with parts of one cut out and mounted on top of the other using wire.

Lieventhal described it as a "combination of print and sculpture that produces the 3D effect."

Rizzi stuck with the novelty, nurturing it when he returned to New York, where he made a name as a street artist with a mural.

In 1976, he participated in the exhibition "Thirty Years of American Printmarking" at the Brooklyn Museum. Four years later, he designed the cover for the first album of a new wave band called the Tom Tom Club.

Rizzi ventured into surprising aesthetic areas.

In New York, he created a limited-edition of the MetroCard subway fare-paying system for the Metropolitan Transportation Authority. His designs also appeared in "CowParade," an exhibit of fiberglass sculptures displayed in New York public spaces.

Rizzi enjoyed some of his biggest successes in Germany and Asia.

There, he designed the ring coat for boxer Henry Maske, china for the Rosenthal company, the front page of a newspaper in Hamburg and some vehicular art ? a toy-size fire engine and three versions of the 1999 Volkswagen "New Beetle."

In 1996, Lufthansa airlines commissioned him to decorate a jet with stars, birds and travelers.

A school in Duisburg is named for Rizzi; in 2001 came the opening of his office building in Braunschweig, dubbed the "Happy Rizzi House." Last year, an oval stained-glass ceiling the "Rizzi Dome" was unveiled at one of Europe's biggest shopping malls, in Oberhausen.

He created ads for the Japanese Railway, and when he boarded planes in Germany, "the flight attendants asked for his autograph."

Rizzi was divorced and had no children. Survivors include his mother, a brother and a sister.

Italy short-term debt costs halve at auction (Reuters)

MILAN (Reuters) ? Italian short-term debt costs halved at auction on Wednesday as a new package of budget austerity and an injection of cheap long-term money from the European Central Bank won Rome some respite in thin year-end markets.

Analysts warned market tensions could easily reignite and pointed to a new test on Thursday when Italy will sell up to 8.5 billion euros ($11.1 bln) of longer-term bonds, including three- and ten-year paper.

But the average rate of 3.25 percent at which Italy sold 9 billion euros of six-month BOT bills was down from a euro lifetime record of 6.50 percent just a month earlier.

"Many things have changed from a month ago: the government has won a confidence vote on its austerity package and the ECB has acted to help banks," an Italian bill trader said.

"This doesn't mean we can rule out further problematic auctions. Markets are easily unnerved."

Demand for bills totaled 1.69 times the amount on offer, a clear improvement versus a bid-to-cover ratio of around 1.5 at the end of November.

This is the first Italian debt sale since the ECB provided 490 billion euros in cheap three-year loans to euro zone banks on December 21 in an unprecedented move aimed at easing credit strains.

Expectations of a strong take-up at the ECB's tender contributed to an equally dramatic fall in Spanish short-term borrowing costs this month.

Madrid's six-month debt costs more than halved to 2.4 percent at an auction on the eve of the ECB's tender.

However, doubts about how much of the cheap three-year funds would find their way into troubled government bonds weighed on Italian and Spanish yields in the following sessions.

Italy's ten-year yields briefly climbed back above 7 percent this week, pushing the premium over the equivalent German benchmark above 500 basis points.

On Wednesday, the yield stood at 6.8 percent, giving a premium of 489 basis points over Germany.

Credit Agricole strategist Peter Chatwell said the results bode well for the auction of three-year bonds on Thursday but he was less sure about the 10-year sale - typically a better measure of underlying interest from external investors.

"Demand for short term paper is good. It remains to be seen whether this extends to the longer maturities," he said.

Italy paid a euro lifetime record high yield of 7.56 percent to sell ten-year bonds at the end of November.

TESTING START

Italy can count on key support from retail domestic investors at short-term sales but longer-term bonds remain more challenging. With more than 91 billion euros of bonds maturing in the first four months of 2012, Rome faces a crucial test early next year.

In a push to regain market confidence, in the run-up to Christmas Italy's parliament gave the final seal to an emergency austerity budget rushed through by a new technocrat government.

Market attention will now turn to the reform agenda of Prime Minister Mario Monti who has promised to tackle Italy's chronic low-growth problems -- after inaction by former PM Silvio Berlusconi pushed the country to the brink of financial disaster.

Monti has convened a cabinet meeting on Wednesday to outline his plans and he could provide some indications to investors in his traditional year-end press conference on Thursday.

Analysts expect Monti's 33 billion euro austerity package to further depress Italy's weak internal demand, making government's efforts to revive growth through a series of long-delayed liberalizations even more crucial.

Italy also sold on Wednesday 1.7 billion euros of 24-month, zero-coupon CTZ bonds at an average yield 4.85 percent, sharply down from 7.8 percent a month ago.

For the first time, the Treasury set a target range for the CTZ sale, as it does for other bonds. It gives a set amount for bill auctions.

The Treasury had planned to sell between 1.5 billion and 2.5 billion euros of CTZs. ($1 = 0.7654 euros)

CSI globalVCard

I've been very excited over the past few months to watch virtual payment systems mature. As a technology, virtual payment systems and other kinds of "smart" payment systems (like near-field communication chips) have been available to us for a much longer time than we've been available to them, due to lack of infrastructure and other adoption stoppers. It feels like it's all starting to fall into place, though. CSI globalVCard (free for apps; requires account) is one of the services that makes me optimistic about wider adoption of smart payment systems. CSI globalVCard is a virtual credit card service designed to help businesses make their accounting systems much simpler?although the potential for personal and family use is at the front of my mind, too.

You have to have a specific corporate credit card account (CSI Corporate Card, issued in this case by Regions Bank) to use the free globalVCard app for iOS (both iPhone and iPad), Android, and BlackBerry. Those apps let you issue individual virtual credit cards from the corporate account to specific employees. Each card has a specified amount, and can include restrictions such as types of purchases allowed and number of uses allowed. The globalVCard system provides a much easier and simpler process for expense reports than reimbursement?because there is no expense report! The purchases are, in effect, approved before they happen.

As enthusiastic as I am about the prospects for the CSI globalVCard system, having tested it, I do think it needs a few more iterations to mature fully. Data visibility, reports from the system, and a few other features should get better over time, but for now, they are a little rudimentary. CSI globalVCard offers an amazing service, and if I had a small business, I would gladly sign up now to get the benefits of what is offered while awaiting new features that will hopefully be added soon.

The Name Explained: CSI globalVCard
"CSI globalVCard" doesn't exactly roll off the tongue, but the name is easier to remember once you realize that the "VCard" part stands for "virtual credit card."

The first half the name is trickier. "CSI" comes from Corporate Spending Innovations,?which operates the globalVCard mobile apps and website. GlobalVCard is the part to remember, though, as it's the keyword you'll need to search for the free app for iOS (both iPhone and iPad), Android, and BlackBerry. With an account, you can also manage the service via the globalVCard website.

What You Need
To use CSI globalVCard, you need a CSI Corporate Card credit line or prefund account.?That requirement alone may make the service sound pretty restrictive, but it's no more restrictive than what's required for Google Wallet (NFC) (4 stars, free with account)?a Nexus 4G phone with Sprint service and a Google Wallet account or Citi MasterCard account. As I mentioned previously, a lack of infrastructure still holds back virtual payment and NFC services, and limits their reach.

Once you have the credit card account, you can sign up for a free account with globalVCard, which takes only a moment. You'll also want to download the app you intend to use and set a four-digit PIN.

Japan emperor praises nation for tackling disaster

TOKYO (AP) -- Japan's Emperor Akihito praised the compassion of a nation striving to overcome the earthquake and tsunami disasters, as he waved from his palace balcony to throngs of well-wishers for his 78th birthday Friday.

Akihito expressed gratitude to all who have worked in the aftermath of the March 11 earthquake and tsunami, which devastated northeastern Japan and left 20,000 people dead or missing. Those he thanked included military personnel, residents of northeastern Japan, volunteers, workers at a hobbled nuclear plant and overseas contributors to relief efforts.

"Looking back on this year, I must say this has been a truly distressing year, dominated by disasters," he said in a statement from the Imperial Household Agency.

"I feel that the Japanese people have come together as a nation to squarely face the disaster," said Akihito, smiling next to his wife, Empress Michiko, who was dressed in a pale beige dress.

He was accompanied by his two sons and their wives.

Akihito, the son of Hirohito - who announced Japan's surrender after World War II - said Japanese people have learned their lesson from history and have vowed never to go to war again. He urged everyone not to forget that lesson of peace, despite the passage of time.

Akihito was hospitalized last month for a fever and an infection, but appeared to be in good health. He said he felt better and thanked people for worrying about his health.

Akihito has three eligible male successors - his two sons and a grandson.

Japan's emperor, revered as divine during the wartime years, now has a largely ceremonial function as a "symbol of the nation."

Obama: GOP-led House ???could learn??? from troops in payroll tax cut debate [VIDEO] (Daily Caller)

After criticizing House Republicans for refusing to ?cooperate? and vote for the Senate?s two-month payroll tax cut extension, President Barack Obama said that the GOP-led House could ?learn something? from U.S. soldiers who ?fight? and ?sometimes die together? but ?don?t care? about politics.

Obama then called for House Republicans to ?do the right thing? and pass the Senate?s bill.

?The clock is ticking; time is running out. And if the House Republicans refuse to vote for the Senate bill, or even allow it to come up for a vote, taxes will go up in 11 days,? Obama told reporters at the White House on Tuesday.

Obama connected his experience with troops returning from Iraq to the payroll tax fight in Congress, calling on the GOP-led House to vote in favor of the two-month payroll tax cut extension.

London's beloved Routemaster bus returns to streets (Reuters)

LONDON (Reuters) ? London welcomed a new open-backed double-decker bus on Friday, six years after the much-loved but ageing fleet of "Routemaster" vehicles were removed from the streets of the British capital.

The distinctive snub-nosed red Routemasters, popular with tourists and locals alike and as synonymous with London as Big Ben and Buckingham Palace, were almost totally withdrawn in 2005 because they were regarded as expensive relics of the past.

The sleek modern bus, which also features a conductor and the distinctive open rear boarding platform to allow people to jump on and off, was unveiled for the first time on Friday, gliding through busy traffic on its first trip through London.

Beaming London Mayor Boris Johnson, who had promised a modern Routemaster in his 2008 election manifesto, said he believed the new design would become as resonant worldwide as its predecessor.

Such is the international attraction of the bus that reporters from across the globe gathered in a chilly Trafalgar Square to see Johnson show off the gleaming "Boris Bus" as it has been dubbed.

"I think the magic thing about this bus is that domed appearance that it has," he told reporters, before launching into the flowery prose for which he is renowned.

"It reminds everybody of all those things that are iconic of London -- the design of an old taxi, or the design of a bowler hat, or the noble domed brow of a battle elephant.

"That's the thing that says London to loads of people. Just going along the streets just now it's been obvious how many people like it and what an eye-catching thing it is."

The original Routemasters were introduced in the capital in 1956 but production stopped in 1968. Some 2,760 trundled through London at their peak, and featured in countless films such as the 1963 Cliff Richard film "Summer Holiday."

The first eight new prototypes, designed and built in Britain, will operate from next February on the number 38 route between Victoria rail station and Hackney in east London.

Hundreds more are expected to be brought in if the trial is deemed successful.

"VANITY PROJECT"

However, not everyone is delighted to see the new look Routemasters, with Labour Party opponents saying Londoners would pay for Conservative Johnson's "shiny vanity project."

They argued it was wrong to spend 11 million pounds on designing and building the initial buses when fares were rising and money was tight amid Britain's economic difficulties.

The cost of a conductor alone would add 72,000 pounds per bus every year, they said.

Johnson was unbowed. "People who reject this bus ... have to answer a very simple question. Do they want a bus that is cleaner and greener ... that is built in Britain and delivers British jobs?" he said.

"Or do they want to go back to a German made bus that is not suitable for the streets of our city."

As a prominent Euroskeptic, Johnson could also not resist a swipe at the European Union as the new bus will be the only one in Europe to feature the hop on/hop off platform, according to London transport officials.

"This is not an anti-EU bus," Johnson said with a smile. "It is important we have been able to restore the open platform in defiance of a lot of skepticism. Obviously there was lots of eyebrows raised in Brussels but we were able to persuade them."

Video: Italian court reveals why it cleared Knox

>>> the italian appeals court that overturned the murder conviction of amanda knox is explaining its ruling in a newly released report. stephanie gosk has details on that. good morning to you.

>> good morning, matt. judge claudio helmand blows holes in nearly every aspect of the prosecution's case at time accusing the prosecutor of ridiculous conclusions based on little fact. the judge's report does in writing what his decision last october did in the courtroom, completely exonerates knox in the murder of meredith kercher . amanda knox was overcome with emotion when her guilty verdict and 26-year prison sentence were overturned. she had spent nearly four years in prison. ushered out of the courtroom, out of italy and finally home to seattle, as quickly as her family could get her there. in a report released thursday the italian judge offered a blistering critique of the prosecution. he says there was no evidence that knox and her former boyfriend, raffaele sollecito , murdered meredith kercher in 2007 . in a statement, knox 's parents write that the report confirms what they knew all along. "the prosecution's theory against her was only that, a theory that had no basis in fact."

>> one could not hope for a more clear statement rendered by an appellate court .

>> reporter: the pros kugs, the judge writes, could not prove that they were in the house at the time of the murder or that they even knew rudy guede , the third suspect who was found guilty of the crime. the judge continues, "the sudden choice of two young people , to commit evil for evil's sake, without any further reason, seems even more incomprehensible." the more than 140-page report repeatedly criticizes the prosecution, flimsy dna evidence , flawed by sloppy police work, no proof that the alleged murder weapon was ever in the house, knox 's interrogation statements were made under duress and she wasn't offered a lawyer. the judge writes "the obsessive interrogation by police went on for hours, both day and night on a young girl who at the time did not speak or understand italian." during the trial the prosecution accused both knox and sollecito of insensitive behavior, criticizing them for buying underwear and kissing in public. it was simple tenderness between two lovers and was also a way of relieving the climate of anxiety and fear that had enveloped them and not, the judge says, a reliable indication of guilt. what the judge doesn't do is provide a theory of what actually happened. the complete details of kercher's death still remain a mystery. the prosecution will appeal to italy's supreme court but only on the appellate process, not the evidence itself. knox and sollecito doesn't have to attend the hearings.

>> thank you very much. it's

Whitecaps acquire Nguyen in MLS weighted lottery

Associated Press Sports

VANCOUVER, British Columbia (AP) - The Vancouver Whitecaps have acquired attacking midfielder Lee Nguyen through Major League Soccer's weighted lottery.

The 25-year-old from McKinney, Texas, signed a multi-year contract with MLS on Dec. 6. Nguyen was entered into the weighted lottery after he had turned down a MLS contract when he was drafted in college. He played a season of college soccer at Indiana before joining the Netherlands' PSV Eindhoven for the 2005-06 season.

The Whitecaps were one of six MLS clubs to participate in Thursday's draw for Nguyen. Vancouver was selected ahead of FC Dallas, the Houston Dynamo, the Los Angeles Galaxy, Real Salt Lake and Toronto FC. Each team's record dictates its probability of winning the draw.

Roche melanoma drug wins European green light (Reuters)

LONDON (Reuters) ? European regulators have recommended approval of a targeted melanoma drug from Swiss group Roche Holding AG, opening the way to a new treatment option for patients with the deadliest form of skin cancer.

The green light for Zelboraf from the European Medicines Agency -- which Roche said on Friday it expected to be formally endorsed by the European Commission in February -- follows U.S. approval in August.

The new drug is given as a twice-daily pill and is designed to be used alongside a companion diagnostic test, also from Roche, that identifies which patients have a specific genetic mutation that means they will benefit from the treatment.

The London-based agency said the benefits of Zelboraf, particularly the improvements seen in terms of patients going longer before their disease progressed and overall survival, outweighed its potential risks.

Side effects from Zelboraf can include secondary growths, rash, slight hair loss, extreme photosensitivity and joint pain.

Zelboraf was developed in partnership with Daiichi Sankyo and became the second drug to be approved for melanoma in the United States this year, after Yervoy from Bristol-Myers Squibb.

Roche said in August that Zelboraf would cost just over $56,000 for a six-month course of treatment in the United States. It has yet to announce a price in Europe.

Analysts tracked by Thomson Reuters Pharma, on average, forecast annual sales of $930 million for the medicine by 2016, making it a useful addition to Roche's market-leading portfolio of cancer therapies.

Zelboraf, known clinically as vemurafenib, is targeted for patients with tumors that have a mutation in a gene known as BRAF that allows melanoma cells to grow. About half of all melanomas have the genetic aberration the drug targets.

The European drugs watchdog said it backed Zelboraf for treating patients with the BRAF mutation who suffered from metastatic or unresectable melanoma, meaning it cannot be removed by surgery.

Melanoma globally afflicts nearly 160,000 new people each year. It can spread quickly to internal organs and average survival is six to nine months.

Reduce Stress by Dividing Your Day into Three Operational Modes [Mind Hacks]

Reduce Stress by Dividing Your Day into Three Operational ModesPeople build stress by thinking about an issue all day or get into a cycle where worrying about something leads to the the behavior we were worried about, such as eating too much because we spend too much time worrying about gaining weight or continually arriving late to work due to the pressure of not running late. We have to break these cycles in order to reduce stress and accomplish our goals. To accomplish this, blogger Tim Horie recommends that we divide our day into three distinct operational modes: thinking, doing, and relaxing.

On the surface that is pretty obvious. But similar to how capturing actions in the Getting Things Done philosophy removes the need to remember everything, having a distinct time to think about our problems and goals and only allowing worrying and planning during those times is rather freeing. When the time comes for the second mode, doing, we will work on our goals and not analyze them. This is similar to the philosophy behind National Novel Writing Month?you're not trying to edit and create a publishable novel, you're just trying to get enough words down that something is accomplished for the day.

Once you're able to set aside time for pure thought and action without analysis you should be able to let everything go for a few hours to relax with a movie, exercising, or spending time with friends.

If you spend a week or so giving the Three Operational Modes technique a try you might find that you have become more productive and less stressed as your thoughts and worries aren't creeping into your work or relaxation time. Photo by Jukka Zitting

Broadcasters want ownership rules overturned (Reuters)

LOS ANGELES (TheWrap.com) ? Broadcasters are urging the Supreme Court to loosen restrictions that prevent companies from owning newspapers, radio stations and television stations in the same market.

In a petition filed Monday, the National Association of Broadcasters (NAB) argues that the court must overturn a Third Circuit decision from last July that left most of the Federal Communications Commission's media ownership regulations intact.

The NAB argues that rather than resulting in dangerous monopolies, allowing broadcasters to own multiple news organizations helps them improve their financial health. That in turn gives them the flexibility to invest in higher quality reporting.

"By harming local television stations all over the country, the duopoly rule also directly harms the public," the petition reads. "When a station struggles financially or ceases to operate, it loses its ability to provide the news and public affairs programming on which members of the public rely. But placing stations under common ownership, resulting in an improvement in financial stability, leads to improved local programming -- both in quality and in quantity -- of the kind that is critical to viewers."

Furthermore, the petition says the Third Circuit's decision conflicts with lower court opinions related to broadcast media ownership rules, and asks the court to intervene so it can clarify the regulations.

The court didn't make its judgment on the merits of the case but said the FCC didn't follow the proper procedure when it changed its rules. Before it can change its rules, the FCC is required to seek public input; the court said the FCC didn't properly get that input.

Previously, a D.C. Circuit Court found that the rules were unnecessary.

The NAB petition argues that the Third Circuit was adjudicating based on an outdated conception of local media. It points out that broadcasters and newspapers compete for audiences and advertising with cable companies, satellite companies and internet sites, not just each other.

"Instead of counting only broadcast television stations, the Commission should have considered all outlets that compete for advertising and audiences in local markets," the petition reads.

The move comes as the FCC appears to be in favor of dialing back at least some of the rules.

FCC Chairman Julius Genachowski is reportedly in favor of loosening ownership rules in top media markets. However, some regulations would remain in place. For example, the commission would continue to limit the number of channels a company could control in local markets and would keep some bans on newspapers and television station cross ownership in place.

Regal Relives WCW World War 3

One of the most popular events in WWE history is the 30-man over-the-top rope battle royal known famously as the Royal Rumble. Initially birthed in 1989, the right to face the WWE Champion at WrestleMania by winning the Royal Rumble did not come into play until 1993. In 1995, the annual WWE tradition initiated World War 3. Literally. (PHOTOS)

In 1995, WCW tried to capture the same excitement and unpredictability that made the Royal Rumble famous. However, the Atlanta-based organization decided to add their own chaotic twist to the tried-and-true formula. WCW President Eric Bischoff believed ?bigger was better? and created World War 3, a 60-man battle royal that took place in three separate rings. The first year?s battle royal was for the vacant WCW Title, the years that followed were for the No. 1 contendership to the WCW Championship.

1305060287001|02:53?Absolute mayhem,? is what came to WWE Superstar William Regal?s mind when he thought about World War 3. Regal, a former WCW competitor, took part in all but one of the massive battle royals that were held from 1995 to 1998.

?There were so many people, and ?? said the former King of the Ring, pausing for a moment before continuing, ?? I?m trying to find a redeeming quality of it, but there is none.?

A major difference between World War 3 and the Royal Rumble - aside from the amount of participants and trio of rings - was the entry of the competitors. Rather than intervals between entrants like the Royal Rumble, the 60 ring warriors battling in World War 3 would all enter the rings before the opening bell. With so many people in the rings at once, Regal believed the risks certainly outweighed the reward.

?It had to be spread out over three rings; there was no way to do it otherwise. It was a very dangerous thing to be in, so many bodies everywhere, but well worth watching from a fan?s perspective.? Regal explained.

?The best in the world could be fighting off a number of people,? he added, ?but all it takes it to get pushed awkwardly or into someone else and you get injured.?

According to Regal, there was certainly a strategy at play if a competitor truly wanted to make a difference, like when the inaugural three-ring clash crowned ?Macho Man? Randy Savage as the WCW Champion.

?One man won?t make a difference against sixty,? Regal said. ?There was a definite strategy involved and the wisest thing to do was to wait until the action condensed to only one ring and then try and make your move.?

1305126446001|03:39The former WCW Television Champion executed that strategy and was one of the final ring warriors in the 1996 World War 3 match, finding himself at odds with The New World Order. Along with Lex Luger, Regal represented WCW and was being cheered on by the anti-nWo audience. A resilient warrior who knew what was at stake, it would take the combined efforts of Scott Hall, The Giant and Kevin Nash to finally eliminate him.

Lasting until the end of the match certainly proved the toughness of the Blackpool native, but he recalled the toll the match took on his body.

?I could barely lift my chin the next morning. When you?ve battled that long against that many people, there?s only so much anyone can take. And you have to move from ring to ring, it was a very odd battle royal.? Regal recalled.

Regal?s stand against the nWo proved that competitors who may not normally meet inside the squared circle would find themselves at odds. One unlikely encounter Regal remembered was when his longtime friend and former tag team partner, Dave Taylor, traded blows with Hulk Hogan inside one of the three squared circles.

?In the 1995 World War 3, it was Dave Taylor?s first WCW match. I remember looking across the ring and seeing Dave give Hogan an uppercut. Hogan wasn?t used to being hit with such ferocity, and seeing the look on his face was an absolute picture. It?s difficult to put into words but Hogan got away from Dave as quickly as possible; it was rather amusing.? Regal said.

1305106007001|02:14The stakes of the battle royal were undoubtedly high, and for some competitors it was their second match of the event. World War 3 hosted many memorable battles, serving as the precursor to WCW?s biggest event of the year, Starrcade. Amongst these matches was a legendary confrontation between Sting and Ric Flair in 1995; Dean Malenko?s WCW Cruiserweight Title defense against Psicosis in 1996, and William Regal and Dave Taylor challenging The Steiner Brothers for the WCW Tag Team Championships in 1997. Each competitor, even if they had a match earlier in the evening, would enter the 60-man bedlam.

Although Regal does not have many fond memories of competing in the 60-man battle royal, he wouldn?t hesitate to enter such a joust in the present day.

?Of course I would compete. I wouldn?t think about if for a second. I?m a competitor; anyone worth their weight would do the same. If there?s an opportunity open that leads to an even bigger opportunity, you?re going to take it.?

World War 3 is an event and a match remembered by WCW fans and former WCW competitors if not for the massive and unique battle royal itself, then certainly for the sheer chaos that ensued inside the three rings. There was nothing like it that came before, and it has never been repeated, making it one of WCW?s most defining and original concepts.

How Do You Make Reading Ad-Filled Web Sites Less Miserable? [Annoyances]

How Do You Make Reading Ad-Filled Web Sites Less Miserable?Developer Brent Simmons (creator of, among other things, the popular NetNewsWire RSS reader), delivers a compelling rant about the overwhelming state of ads, social media buttons, and other flashing widgets on web sites where the main goal is (presumably) giving people something to read. It's a problem that's been around for a while, and a large crop of tools have surfaced specifically to deal with this. Here's an examination of your best options.

The list is long (consider the length indicative of how widespread the annoyance is).

If your main goal is simple ad blocking, you have:

(Incidentally, you may want to use an ad blocker even if you don't want to block ads.)

If instead you just don't want to be bogged down by distracting Flash ads, you can block Flash with:

If your issue is less about ads and more about all the clutter, then your best bet is to use one of these read-it-later apps or in-browser, reader-friendly tools:

  • Instapaper strips ads and superfluous page content so you can read a distraction-free version of an article in your browser, on your iPhone or iPad, on Kindle, and on various other devices (we like InstaFetch for Android and Windows Phone 7)
  • Read It Later is another similar tool with extensions for Chrome, Firefox, IE, and Safari, and apps for Android, iPhone, and BlackBerry. (For a better idea of what separates Instapaper from Read It Later, check out our battle of the bookmark-and-read-later apps
  • Lastly, there's Readability for you browser and iPhone.

My take on ad-blocking and clutter removal?and the approach I think most people take to the matter?is that to the extent that ads and clutter aren't ruining my experience, I'm happy to support the sites I frequent by keeping ads enabled. Unfortunately, unobtrusive advertising is becoming less and less common. Simmons predicts it'll get worse:

I think it was in the Space Merchants (or maybe in The Merchants' War) where this future was predicted: lower-class people would be subjected to a ton of advertising ? accompanying every moment awake and asleep ? while upper-class people would be insulated.

It seems obvious now, but in the '50s I don't think it was. And now we'd add that it's not a class thing entirely ? technical proficiency is part of the equation. If you're technical enough to figure out how to install AdBlock.., you'll cut way down on ads.

Luckily for you, if you're reading this you probably fall into the "technically proficient" crowd. As such, we're curious: What's your preferred method of making ad-filled web sites less miserable? Let's here it in the comments.

Markets rise on euro hopes, US jobs improvement (AP)

LONDON ? Global markets rose on Friday as investors welcomed German Chancellor Angela Merkel's call to enforce tighter government spending rules and a surprise drop in the U.S. unemployment rate.

In a closely scrutinized speech to Germany's parliament, Merkel said the 17 nations that use the euro currency must move quickly to restore market confidence, changing EU treaties to make financial controls stricter and more binding.

She reiterated her objection to so-called eurobonds ? debt jointly backed by eurozone countries ? and warned that the debt crisis will take years, not months, to fix. But her call for long-term changes suggested a commitment to strengthen financial union between countries in the euro, something analysts have said is necessary to make sure the eurozone doesn't break up.

Merkel and French President Nicolas Sarkozy are meeting Monday to discuss potential treaty changes. The talks will culminate in a Dec. 9 summit of EU leaders, where the proposals are expected to be debated and detailed.

Investors are hoping if eurozone governments agree to longer-term changes in the way they control their finances, the European Central Bank will agree to step up its interventions in the bond markets. Those interventions keep borrowing rates down for debt-troubled nations like Italy.

Whether the ECB will agree to step up its bond purchases is not clear, although its President Mario Draghi hinted Thursday that it was a possibility.

"Expectations have been growing that a 'Grand Plan' will be delivered next week," said Frederik Ducrozet, analyst at Credit Agricole CIB.

European stocks rose, as did bonds for Italy and Spain. Britain's FTSE 100 gained 1.1 percent to 5,548.87 while Germany's DAX added 1.0 percent to 6,094.66. France's CAC-40 climbed 1.4 percent to 3,172.22.

Italy's 10-year bond yield was down to 6.52 percent, almost a full percentage lower than Wednesday, an indication investors have high hopes of next week's talks to save the euro. Spain's 10-year yield was down to 5.56 percent.

Wall Street also rose on the open ? the Dow Jones industrial average was up 0.8 percent at 12,111 while the Standard & Poor's 500 rose 0.8 percent to 1,255 after the release of cautiously upbeat U.S. jobs data.

The U.S. government said the unemployment rate fell to 8.6 percent in November, the lowest in 2 1/2 years and better than economists' expectations for an unchanged rate of 9 percent.

The world's largest economy also added 120,000 jobs in November, while the previous two months were revised up to show another 72,000 more jobs were created ? the fourth straight month the government revised prior months higher.

Although the drop in the unemployment rate was unexpected, the increase in jobs was roughly as forecast by most analyst.

Earlier in Asia, Japan's Nikkei 225 index rose 0.5 percent to end at 8,643.75, its highest closing in three weeks. Hong Kong's Hang Seng rose 0.2 percent and Australia's S&P/ASX 200 added 1.4 percent.

South Korea's Kospi was marginally down and mainland Chinese shares also lost ground as investors cashed in on earlier gains. The benchmark Shanghai Composite Index lost 1 percent.

Markets continued to enjoy some momentum from Wednesday, when the U.S. Federal Reserve, European Central Bank, Bank of England and the central banks of Canada, Japan and Switzerland jointly made it easier for banks to borrow dollars.

The coordinated effort was meant to prevent Europe's debt crisis from exploding into a global panic. Should a European bank fail or if a country default on its debt, investors fear it could result in a freeze-up in global lending like the one that occurred in 2008 when Lehman Brothers collapsed.

China's central bank also acted to release money for lending and to shore up growth by lowering bank reserve levels for the first time in three years. The bank actions caused global stocks to rally Thursday.

Benchmark oil for January delivery was down 5 cents to $100.15 per barrel in electronic trading on the New York Mercantile Exchange on Friday. The contract lost 16 cents to end at $100.20 per barrel on the Nymex on Thursday.

In currency trading, the euro rose to $1.3478 from $1.3460 late Thursday in New York. The dollar rose to 77.93 yen from 77.76 yen.
